significant chemical variability, which is in correlation with the specific ecological
requirements of the species.
The evaluation of medicinal plant ecotypes for quantitative and qualitative
differences in secondary metabolites with regard to growth and development
of these species has been provided a possibility for successive introduction
with valuable genotypes as well as possibilities of sustainable technology of
reproduction.
The biological and chemical characterisation, multiplication of plant material,
selection and other pre-breeding studies have determined in many cases
nature populations with high productivity and a content of secondary metabolites.
The use of sustainable technologies, reproduction and assessment of their best
forms has allowed breeding of these medicinal species in controled conditions.
The Institute of Botany has created a collection of these rare medicinal
plants where selected seeds and reproductive materials are produced and
dispossible for breeding in agrosystems in the country too. With the assistance
of scientific programs, sponsored by Ministry of Education and Science and
UNDP, considerable progress has been achieved in cultivating these plant
species.
