Bulgaria has a very rich and diverse flora, including significant resources

of medicinal plants. They show great biological, ecological and landscape

variety. More than 750 species from the Bulgarian flora are used in the

traditional medicine, and a more than 250 out of them are subject to daily

trade (H a r d a 1о v a, et al; 1998). The big biological resources and the

quality of the medicinal drugs derived thereof determine Bulgaria as a

leader in the export list of Europe ( L a n g e , 1998). The natural resources

of some of the medicinal species are limited and their collection has led

to their decrease. Some medicinal plants became extinct. More than 70

plant species, used in official and folk medicine are protected by the Law

of Medicinal Plants (2000) or have a restricted regime of collection (H a r-

d a 1 о v a, et al; 1998).

Protection and use of medicinal plants are of a great importance, not

only for the Bulgarian flora but also for the world flora. One of the best
