lectures. We shall always remember the field courses and botanical excursions lead by
Prof. Ivan Assenov. His extreme accuracy and precise work was a guiding light for
generations of students. Prof. Ivan Aseenov was author and co-author of many textbooks
in pharmacognosy and botany.
The scientific research activity of Prof. Ivan Aseenov was focused on plant
taxonomy, phytochemistry, floristics and chorology. He is author and co-author of more
than 170 scientific publications in national and international journals. The contribution of
Prof Ivan Assenov to one of the most important Bulgarian botanical series - “Flora of
PR Bulgaria” edited by Acad. Daki Jordanov (1963-1995) is significant. In volume II
(1964) he is a co-author with S. Vulev regarding the Muscari M ill, and Allium L. (Lili-
aceae). His contribution to volume III (1966) are the genera Holosteum L., Stellaria L.,
Myoston M oench , Moenchia Ehrh. (Caryophyllaceae) and genera Polygonum L„, Per-
sicaria M ill., Bilderdykia Dum ., Pleuropteropyrum H. G ross, Reynoutria Hutt.,
Fagopyrum M ill., (Polygonaceae), The identification tables were constructed in co-
authorship with S. Vulev, For volume IV (1970) he contributed with Aristolochiaceae
and Cruciferae (Brassicaceae), the identification tables and the description o f the genera
Sisymbrium L., Descurainia Webb, et Berth., Alliaria Scop ., Arabidopsis (DC)

(1995) was related to genera Digitalis L. and Rhinanthus L. (Scrophulariaceae).
Special attention deserves the taxa new for science or for the Bulgarian flora de­
scribed by Prof. Ivan Assenov - Alchemilla pawlowskii A ssen o v , Persicaria mitis
(Schrank ) A s s e n o v ,/5. salicifolia (B rou ss. ex W ild .) A ssen o v , P. orlentalls (L.)
A sse n o v , the Balkan endemic Alissoides bulgarica (Sagor.) Assenov (Йорданов
1963-1995, Кожухаров 1992).
An important part of the research activity of Prof. I. Assenov is related to the in­
vestigation and assessment of the natural resources o f the Bulgarian medicinal plants,
their effective use and protection.
He is author and co-author of the famous monographs “The herbs in each home”
(in Bulg.), “Phytotherapy and traditional medicine” (in Bulg.), “Healing the animals with
