IN MEMORIAL
Prof. Dr. IVAN ASSENOV (1932-2004)
On 81' July 2004 the Bulgarian pharmaceutical and botanical community lost one
of Its most eminent members. Briliant scientist and lecturer, Prof. Dr. Ivan Assenov left
unforgetable and bright trace. He was a prominent and long term-teaching lecturer at the
Faculty of Pharmacy, former head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Botany and
Vice-Rector.
Prof. Ivan Asenov was bom in 1932 in the fothills o f the Rila Mts. in the town of
Dupnitza. During the period 1951-1956 he studied pharmacy at the Faculty o f Pharmacy.
In the period 1956-1959 he obtained a second university degree in botany at the
University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski".
Fie started teaching immediately at both the University o f Sofia and Faculty o f
Pharmacy.
In 1981 Prof. Ivan Assenov defended his PhD thesis entitled “Pharmacognostic
and chenio-taxonomical study o f genus
Geinn
L. presented in the Bulgarian flora”. Since
1983 Prof. Ivan Assenov worked as associate professor and in 1991 he was elected a full
professor.
For fifteen years Prof. Ivan Assenov was Head o f the Department of
Pharmacognosy. During the period 1995-2000 he was elected a Vice-Rector responsible
for the scientific activity of the Medical University o f Sofia.
All of us, who had the chance to be his students, will keep unforgetable memories
about the attractive way of teaching and the encyclopedical informativeness o f his
