most often on rocky ground. The localities are isolated and contain single
specimens. Only one specimen was found in the first locality and three in the
second one. These are the most western localities in Bulgaria.

This rare species was found on clay rocks near the villages of Dragomirovo,
Hadzhidimitrovo, Kozar Belene, Sovata, Bulgarene, Delyanovtzi, Chervena
and the town of Levski. The plant was reported for the villages of Novo selo,
Pavlikeni district, but the localities near the town of Pleven ( Ве лч е в ,
К о ж у х а р о в , Анч е в (ред.), 1992) have not been confirmed. In spite of
their isolation the populations are numerous and occur on terrains unsuitable
for human activities. Therefore, the species is not threatened in the region.

This rare in Bulgaria species is enlisted in Annex I of the Bern Convention.
Several localities are known in Bulgaria - the Black Sea cost, North - Eastern
Bulgaria, the Danube Plain, the Balkan foothill region and Eastern Stara
Planina Mountain (Леев , 1979). It has disappeared from most of the localities,
i. e. the „Persinski Blata“ Reserve due to changes in the water regime. The
only locality confirmed until now is the ,,Srebarna“ Biosphere Reserve. The
establishment of the species in the region of Belene and the town of Tutrakan
shows a high ecological adaptation of this species. It is necessary to look for
it in other places along the Danube. Similar to the case with Nuphar lutea it
is necessary to place artificially move fruit or whole plants to suitable localities
including artificial water reserves.

The locality is relict and remote from the main part of the area of this rare
species in the mountains. It is known from all parts of the country but only
above 750 m asl. (Ле е в , 1982).
