Abstract. This paper presents the first data of the ongoing inventory of the vascular flora

found on selected itineraries in the Nature Reserve „Rilomanastirska Gora“ located in the

Central Rila Mountains. As a result of the investigation 360 taxa from 234 genera and 72 families

are established, among them rare and protected species, and a high number of medicinal plants.

The protection of the biological diversity is the main task in the establishment

of protected areas in our country. Recently, an intensive research focused on

the inventory of the plant and animal diversity is being conducted in the

Bulgarian protected areas. A good example of combining science and nature

conservation is the publication of the Rapid Ecological Assessment of Rila

Monastery Nature Park (P e e v et al., 1999; Е в с т а т и е в а , 2003; E в с т а

ти e в a и др., 2003; Ц о н е в а , Пе е в , 2003). This protected area is an

unique combination of the most famous Bulgarian monastery and a territory

with rich biodiversity. For many years the annual summer field courses in

plant systematics of the students from the Faculty of Biology at Sofia

University „St. Kliment Ohridski" have been organized in this area thus

collecting also valuable information on the present flora of the vascular
