Developing potato varieties resistant to diseases and pests by traditional

breeding methods is a long process. It depends on presence o f valuable

parental material, reliable methods o f assessing and selecting plants for

breeding, large amount o f work and material costs. Besides, genetic base

o f potato breeding requires regular widening.

In some cases cell technologies can supply and promote the breeding

process, offer genetic diversity at somatic cell level and make it possible to

screen genotypes having good economic characters. In the process of potato

ceil breeding for resistance to pathogens we used following selective agents:

1) complex of exoenzyms of

Erwinia atroseptica,

blackleg pathogen;

2) toxin of

Corynebacterium sepedonicum,

ring rot pathogen;

3) 1.3-1.6 glucans,

Phytophthora infestans

eliciters

Different selective agents require different experimental approaches and

interpretation o f obtained results. For example, the role of toxins in plant

diseases is not always clear.

Studying correlation o f resistance to pathogen

in vitro

and

in vivo

is a

necessary step. It makes possible to some degree to assess the expression

o f resistance character at cell level and further in tuber generations.

Lines of following varieties: Borodyansky rozovy, Vodogray, Zarevo,

Kobza, Lugovskoy, Nezabudka, Phytophthoroustoychivy and others with

wide resistance range have been obtained by the research. 10% o f the lines

have high resistance (8-9 points) which is stable in tuber generations; it

permits to involve them into reeding process.
