The donor plant for the production of somaclones was a canola breeding
line. The yield of regenerants was 20%. Selfed seed from 15 somaclones
was sown in the field and seed from the initial population was sown in its
neighbourhood. Sixty plants from the progenies of somaclones and 50 plants
from the initial population, which phenotypically conformed to modern
selection criteria, were selected and covered wich bags. Mean contents of
fatty acids and glucosinolates in lines from somaclones and the initial
population are given in the Table.

O f 49 lines from somaclones, 45 did not contain erucic acid, its content
was up to 1% in 4. O f 33 lines from the initial population, 4 contained more
than 10% of erucic acid. The content of eicosenoic acid was also decreased
by more than twofold in lines from somaclones. The differenc in the content
o f the other fatty acids was small, although statistically significant. The
content of glucosinolates increased almost fourfold in lines from somaclones,
their content was 0.42% only in one line, more than 2% in all the other lines.
An increase in glucosinolate content somaclones and androgenic rape lines
has been reported other authors.
The variation range in the content of all fatty acids and glucosinolates
was smaller in lines from somaclones than in those from the initial population.
