Considerable nutrient losses during silo storage are caused by aerobic decay as a result of yeasts and fungi

growth aŌer opening the pit. HeterofermentaƟve lactobacilli are natural antagonists to them. They are used

for the biological preparaƟons “

Biotrof

600” and “

Biotrof

700” for ensiling based on

Lactobacillus plantarum

and

Lactobacillus

buchneri

respecƟvely. The efficacy of ensiling plant material with these preparaƟons was as-

sessed in comparison to homofermentaƟve bacterial preparaƟons and chemical preservaƟves. AerobioƟc sta-

bility of the feed was also esƟmated as dependent on the inoculum. Laboratory, semi-industrial and industrial

trials were organized to assess the feed quality by the fermentaƟon products, nutrient losses and producƟve

effect of the experimental feeds on faƩening Black-and-White bull-calves. Nutrient losses during the preserva-

Ɵon period are higher in heterofermentaƟve working, and the green mass’ sugars to buffer raƟo being low (<

3.0), they do not provide the required feed pH. However, ensiling grasses with high sugars to buffer raƟo, the

studied preparaƟons provided the best aerobioƟc stability, with only 2 % nutrient losses in comparison to 5 %

in the homofermentaƟve-inoculated material. The producƟve effect of silage made with “

Biotrof

700” was also

higher than that of the untreated fodder: the bull-calves daily weight gain was 13.7 % more in comparison to

the reference group.
