Transformation of plants with interferon system genes is able to cause

some modification of plant resistance reactions. In this study we present

data of productivity of potato regenerant lines, obtained by transformation

with

Agrobacterium

tumefaciense bearing human interferon construction. In

the greenhouse experiments we observed increased (10-50 %) average yield

in regenerant lines o f 12 o f 21 cultivars comparing to the untransformed

control. Some of these lines preserved increased productivity for 5-6 years

o f field reproduction, others returned to control level within different time

periods. Repeated tuber reproduction from

in vitro

plants for the later lines

was not succesful in reversing yield up to increased level. Average yield of

control lines obtained by regeneration on kanamicyne containing medium

exept A.tumefaс ens cocultivation or after cocultivation with the strain not

caning resistance genes did not exceed the yield o f initial plants. But in this

group several lines were met with increased yield supported for some years.

Different contents o f endogenic PSTV or possibly its dynamics both in fields

and

in vitro

may be a possible reason for yield variation. Increased yield for

lines of cvs. Nevskiy and Beloyarskiy ranniy correlated with decreasing of a

number of tubers revealing PSTV infection symptoms. Initial plants of Nevskiy,

Temp and Beloyarskiy ranniy cvs. revealed PSTV, but regenerant

in vitro

lines of these cvs. (5 of 10 for Nevskiy, 2 of 2 for Temp and 6 of 9 for Beloyarskiy

ranniy) didn't reveal PSTV judging by molecular hybridizationdata. The

decrement in yield from higher level to initial one was in paralel with increasing

o f PSTV tubers. So possible expression of interferon gene or transformation

procedure itself may effect the yield indirectly through variation of PSTV

contents in regenerant lines.
