The genus Clematis L. from the family Ranunculaceae Juss. is known

as "lomonos". In the State Nikita Botanical Garden a wealth collection of

clematis (200 species, varieties and forms) were gathered. Among clematises

large flowered forms have been propagated vegetative only. Moreover, the

seedlings did not have a decorative quality.

The somatic embryogenesis is highly perspective method for mass

propagation of valuable genotypes. For shoots proliferation the explants

(vegetative buds 2.5-3.0 mm in size) isolated from 3-5 years plants of clematis

cv. Serenade Kryma were placed on the modified Pierik culture medium

containing 0.89 mM BAP from April till May. On the base of microcuts on

the modified MS medium with 1.82 mM zeatin and 0.046 mM IBA a light

green callus was formed. This callus was separated. After 20-30 days of

culturing a somatic embryoids were appeared. They were arranged in group

(20-30 embryos per explant) and lightly parted from each other. During 1.5-

2 month the length of shoots and roots of plants obtained from somatic

embryoids was achieved 8-10 cm and 5-7 cm, respectively.

Thus, we were the first to induce indirect somatic embryogenesis and

to produce clematis cv. Serenade Kryma plantlets.
