Analysis of a long-standing research on cultivation of wheat anthers

with the aim of obtaining homozygous lines permitted us to reveal the following

statistical characteristics:

• regularity of the viability of cultured microspores

■regularity of embryoids formation

■regularity of plants regeneration

Dynamics of microspores viability was examined under the microscope

by staining anthers with a vital dye; 1000 microspores were examined at

certain intervals within 20 days of cultivation. The number of viable

microspores decreased by half on the 2-3 day, and by the 10th day of

cultivation no more than 30 microspores remained alive. The frequency

distribution character of viable microspores corresponded to the exponential

function.

Development of embryoids was observed by using anther specimens

temporally fixed on the 1st through 30th day of cultivation. On the 20th day

of cultivation we observed 10-15 proembryos per 1000 anther grains, the

number of proembryos decreased by the 30th day of cultivation due to their

destruction.

Investigation of the processes of embryoids and regenerants formation

in the anther culture was conducted on 376 hybrids F 1 ,138 cultivars of

spring wheat and 58 cultivars of winter wheat.

Evaluation of the character of average distributions of embryoids and

regenerants formation in each of the three above mentioned sample sizes

confirmed their agreement with the exponential function.

A certain positive correlation (p= 0,8) was revealed between the averages

of embryoids and regenerants formation.
