Silphium perfoliatum

as a minor forage crop is currently culƟvated in the forest-steppe of the Northern Kazakhstan

region of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Omsk region of the Russian FederaƟon. It was introduced in the moder-

ate arid condiƟons of the Northern Kazakhstan as a promising crop due to its high quality feed. The germinaƟon abil-

ity and plant survival during the following three years were recorded in our research. The main development stages

and the vegetaƟon period length were marked. The dynamics of green mass accumulaƟon was studied in the cuƫng

period, from shooƟng Ɵll flowering. The nutriƟonal value was recorded by content of feed units, digesƟble protein

and metabolizable energy. The research was conducted in 2011–2014 in accordance with the field studies methodol-

ogy. The main results refer to the full plant development, which was 256 days. The maximal green mass producƟvity

reached 30.3 tons ha

-1

in the flowering period of the 3

rd

year, being 1.9 tons ha

-1

lower than that in the forest-steppe.

The silphium producƟvity was 3.62 tons ha

-1

dry mass, 2.09 tons ha

-1

feed units, 0.54 tons ha

-1

digesƟble protein. The

crop culƟvaƟon profitable was 109 %. Therefore, it is possible to culƟvate silphium in the condiƟons of the moderate

arid steppe of the Northern Kazakhstan for vitaminized grass meal, silage, and also in a fresh kind. Balanced fodder is

available in the harvesƟng maturity — in budding stage and in the middle of budding stage–beginning of flowering.

Keywords:

perennial forage crop, harvesƟng maturity, producƟvity, nutriƟonal value, economical effeciency.
