What is a “Digital Soil Mapping”? (a review) //

Digital

soil mapping: theoretical and experimental studies. – M.: Dokuchaev Soil Science

Institute, 2012. Р. 9-18.

The terms “Digital soil mapping” (DSM) and “Digital map” (DM) have a deeper

meaning in soil science as compared to the other disciplines. Under discussion is the

DSM definition proposed by Alex McBratney, the founder of this direction in science on

soil. The principles of compiling digital soil maps are also discussed. It is shown that the

logical DSM scheme is not contrary to that used for compiling a traditional soil map. In-

formation on factors responsible for soil formation and soil indicators is collected in

SCORPAN database. Digital Soil Mapper is the most important second DSM component.

Maps compiled by DSM technology contain results of all the investigations carried out at

the territory under study and have a number of other advantages. However, the same

problems remain in DSM as those with the traditional soil mapping. The review of avail-

able publications on DSM is given to show the development of DSM terminology. The

paper gives a brief review of the

GlobalSoilMap.net

project.

Dokuchaev’s hypothesis – the basic idea of digital predic-

tive soil mapping (to the 125

th

anniversary of his publication) //

Digital soil

mapping: theoretical and experimental studies. – M.: Dokuchaev Soil Science In-

stitute, 2012. Р. 19-25.

It is shown that the idea of predictive soil mapping that has been formulated by

V.V. Dokuchaev in 1886 occupies one of the central places in modern soil science. It is

noted that G. Jenny has adopted S.A. Zakharov’s soil formation formula.

Computer-based imitation of soil mapping //

Digital soil map-

ping: theoretical and experimental studies. – M.: Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute,

2012. Р. 26-34.

The knowledge of a pedologist-geographer about local soil-landscape relationships

may be considered as a basis of indirect (predictive) soil mapping. The knowledge for-

malization should be based upon the imitation process of compiling the traditional soil

maps by GIS-technologies. The imitation quality of indirect soil mapping is mainly de-

termined by available information on soil-forming factors containing in the GIS-database.

Being guided by expert knowledge and using them as much as possible, computer-based

imitation of indirect soil mapping permits to make this process more unbiased and repro-

ducible. Due to this fact the given approach is advantageously different both from tradi-

tional and completely automated methods.
