Over-irrigation (540 mm) reduced considerably oil content; oil production was highest when the irrigation requirement was

fully met (415 mm). The carvacrol content of the oil was 81%, irrespective of treatment.

Saae

Four amounts o f water applied by drip irrigation are tested with Sage. Irrigation in 1999 started in m id-April and ended

in mid-November and was applied every 2 weeks early in the irrigation season and weekly during the summer and autumn

months. The amounts of water tested were 125, 215, 310 and 405 mm, equivalent to 40, 70, 100 and 130% of the esti

mated irrigation requirement, respectively. The crop was harvested in late March, mid-June and early December. Annual

fresh yield (stems, leaves and flowers), marketable air-dried yield (leaves and flowers) and oil yield decreased when sea

sonal irrigation was lower than 310 mm.

Lavender Mariettas

Four amounts of water are tested with four selected lavender varieties (Wostorg, Kochkin, Jalta and Angustifolia).

Irrigation in 1999 started in late April and ended in mid-October and was applied by drippers every 10 days in May, week

ly during the summer months and every two weeks in autumn. The amounts of water tested were 115, 200, 290 and 375

mm, equivalent to 40, 70,100 and 130% of the estimated irrigation requirement, respectively. The crop was harvested in

June, without significant yield differences among irrigation treatments. Concerning varieties, total fresh yield (stems and

flowers), marketable air-dried yield (flowers only) and oil yield were highest in Kochkin and Jalta followed by Wostorg;

lower yields of Wostrog were due to the fact that many plants did not produce any flowers this year. Yields of Angustifolia

were lowest due to smaller plant size and lower oil content.

Introduction of new species/varieties

In the framework of the Agreement on Scientific and Technical Collaboration with Russia, we have introduced a num

ber of species/varieties from that country which we are testing under local conditions.
