GOALS OF THE HUNGARIAN SOUR CHERRY BREEDING

The yearly 60-80 000 tons of Hungarian sour cherry production is
5th of the world. At that time Hungary has the widest range of
sour cherry varieties.
Hungarian sour cherry breeding was started in 1950 by late Paul
Maliga and had been going on by Janos Apostol for 28 years.
Later the purpose was added with requiring for mechanical
harvesting and from 1990 resistant to diseases.
The disease resistant sour cherry varieties has been going on
jointly with Michigan State University, supported by US-Hungarian
Joint Board.
The first purpose of the breeging programme was to self fertile
and high quality new* varieties both for fresh consumption and
canning industry, producing constantly high yields
The success of there breeding work: 7 breaded varieties and 2
candidate varieties: Meteor korai, Favorit,
Jubileum, Korai
pipacs meggy, Erdi botermo, Maliga emleke, Csengodi (resistant to
Leaf spot and brown rot), IV-3/48 and IV-2/152 (candidate varie
ties). All of them are self fertile. At the present some 2000 sour cherry
hybrids arc in trial and the crossbreeding is has been going on.
