Intensive researches with potatoes in various biotechnological lines in

Ukraine in 1970-1985 favored their practicable using in seed production o f

the crop.

Seed production. The system o f organization and special measures on

healthy upto-date seed reproducing has been developed and introduced in

com form ity with the Seed Low of Ukraine. Using of various active methods,

fo r example in 1987-1997, made it possible not only to make 81 variety

healthy but to reproduce about 65% o f elite potato seeds with due regard fo r

biological peculiarities of the variety. Studies on methods of diagnostics and

healthy material adaptation to the environmental conditions, using and

improving o f hydroponic technologies and developing o f optimum schemes

o f its subsequent involvement into potato seed production process, variety

identification and certification are in progress.

Genetic and breeding researches. A fte r putting the Law on Protection

o f Rights to Plant Varieties in force, applied studies on using of cell-engineering

technologies in such lines as cell breeding, somatic hybridization and genetic

transformation have become more active, though traditional methods remain

principal in potato breeding. Choosing o f the method for developing of variety

o r parental material depends not only on plant (potato) species but on the

degree o f the method development, on amount o f genetic information , on

resources of breeding institution etc., as well as on economic expediency of

the method for specific breeding program.
