A method of clonal micropropagation of a valuable medicinal and
decorative plant
Echinacea purpurea
has been developed. The method allows
fo r the development of clonal population o f high productive unique genotypes
o f this cross-pollinated crop, since in sexual (seed) propagation it is difficult
to keep the cultivar (sort) charateristics. The adaptation of the test tube
plants is executed in the selection-greenhouse complex conditions of the
All-Union Scientific Research Institute o f Forages.
Grown soil culture (potted) regenerants planted in an open ground can
flower in the year o f planting. Well-hibernated plants in their second year o f
life in an open ground reached a hight o f more than 1 meter and had more
than 12-15 inflorescences. The posibility o f transferring the test tube
regenerants directly in an opened ground has been investigated. 100% survival
o f the regenerants was observed in well-moistened soil. Regenerants
considerably surpassed the growth index o f plants obtained from seeds.
Various aspects of clonal micropropagation of
Echinacea purpurea
are being
discussed.
