The influence o f light ( 1 2 h/day; 6,1 V t/m2 ) on growth, sizes of

chloroplasts and pigments formation was investigated' in hairy root cultures

o f garden heliotrope, Control was in the dark. Light essentialy delaied the

growth o f the hairy roots. A fte r transfer on fresh medium the growth was

began through 10- 12 days, while in the dark this process was observered

through 2-3 days. Growth index reached 6,4 in the light and 35,2 in the dark.

IAA and abscisic asids activity was higher in the dark. Ratio free IAA / free

abscisic asid reached 1,74 in the light and 3,05 in the dark. Dark-grown

cultures were pale brown as opposed to slighly greenish in colour fo r the

light-grown cultures. The number of chloroplasts in cell of transformed roots

was sim ilar to that of palisade plant leaf cell. However, chloroplasts o f leaf

cells was larger 2-fold. We was found difference in volume o f cell, according

to one chloroplast, which reached 846,93 mkm3 in the roots and 417,88

mkm3 in the leaves. In the light was formated chlorophill ( [Chi a = 4,99 x 10

-3 mg/g dry weight, [Chi b] = 2,98 x 10 -3 mg/g d ry w e ig h t). In the dark

chlorophills wasn't found. The carotenoid concentration in the light was higher

2,3-fold than in the dark. Ratios chlorophill a/ b and chlorophill (a+b)/

carotenoids reached 1,7.
