Orbovic@afrodita.rcub.bd.ac.yuCentaurium erythraea G ilib., Centaury, is a medicinal plant of the
Gentianaceae family. This is a biannual plant with leaves arranged in a rosette.
Like some other species of Gentianaceae family, Centaury contains specific
compounds used as a drug.
Adventitious
roots of
Centaurium erythraea
derived from
in vitro
grown seedlings were cultured on half-strength MS
medium supplemented with various auxins and cytokinins. Cultures were
kept both in light and in darkness. Within four weeks of culture adventitious
buds were developed directly on explants without an intervening callus tissue.
Significant differences in frequency o f shoot formation were found among
the tested cytokinins and auxins. Shoot production was achieved at high
frequency on explants cultured on the medium supplemented with CPPU,
KlN and BAP at 1-3 mM . The lower average number o f shoots was obtained
in the presence of 2iP and diphenylurea. A ll tested auxins showed inhibitory
effect on shoot formation. Light had a stimulatory effect on bud induction
and development in the presence of both cytokinins and auxins.
