anniversary of the foundaƟon of Voronezh Experimental StaƟon on Perennial

Grasses of the All-Russian Williams Fodder Research InsƟtute, RAAS. A brief history of foundaƟon of the insƟtu-

Ɵon, main stages of its development, areas of work and achievements in the sphere of forage producƟon are pre-

sented. The results of experiments of the last years and long-term goals are given. For the last 10 years six new va-

rieƟes of perennial gramineous and legume grasses meeƟng modern requirements of agricultural industry were

created at the staƟon. As a result of collaboraƟve breeding work between the research group of Voronezh Experi-

mental StaƟon on Perennial Grasses and the All-Russian Williams Fodder Research InsƟtute RAAS,

‘Diana’

variety

of

Festuca rubra

was created via polycross and selecƟon in the progenies of similar plants by the nature of Ɵllering

and seed producƟvity.

‘Voronezhskiy 17’

variety of smooth brome was created on the basis of interspecific hybrid-

izaƟon; in 2010 it was enlisted into the State Register and admiƩed to usage in the 1

regions. A new va-

riety of perennial ryegrass

‘Voronezhskiy’

for lawns was created in cooperaƟon with the employees of All-Russian

Williams Fodder Research InsƟtute RAAS. It was also included into the State Register in 2011. The variety tolerates

Due to the climate change, a research programme

was developed for involving more drought-tolerant plants in the breeding process

.

Alfalfa populaƟons suitable for

polyspecific phytocenoses with smooth brome have been being studied at the staƟon since 2001. CompeƟƟve al-

falfa samples, minimally suppressed by smooth brome, maintain 32–50 % of leguminous component content in the

first harvest and 33–67 % in the second on the fourth year of life. The best sample SGV-263 hybrid was presented

for the state variety trial in 2012. All the varieƟes of our breeding at the staƟon are used for primary seed breeding.
