MATERIALS AND METHODS

The macromycetes were registered in the 1999-2003 period in the predominant

plant communities in the Pleven’s Hills. The fungi specimens were collected

following tracking method in the 6 localities (Fig. 1):

1. Community of

Tilia tomentosa

Mo e n c h , forest plantations of

Pinus

nigra

and

P. sylvestris

and dry pastures in the Itzovo Branishte locality, between

the Pleven town and Jassen village and on the hills over Vit River.

2. Plantation of

P. nigra

in the Tabakovija Jazovir locality, southwest of the

town Pleven.

3. Communities of

Quercus cerris

L. and grasslands near the Chernelka

riverside, between villages of Kashin, Kartozhabene, Gradina, Petarnitza and

Gortalovo.

4. Communities of

Q. cerris, T. tomentosa, Carpinus orientalis

Mil l . ; forest

plantation of

P. nigra, P. sylvestris, Picea abies

(L.) Ka r s t . ,

Betula pendula

R o t h and dry pastures in Kailaka protected area with the Bohotska forest.

5. Mesophile grasslands near the Vit River in the surroundings of Bivolare

village.

6. Pastures on a loess near Totleben village.

The macromycetes were determined according to Moser (1978), Ryman,

Holmasen (1992), Courtecuisse, Duhem (1995) and Phillips (1981).

Macromycete nomenclature is given according to Kirk et al. (2001).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In the Pleven’s Hills 115 macromycete species were collected and identified:

114 species from the class Basidiomycetes and 1 species from the class

Ascomycetes. The fungi related to 11 orders, 32 families and 58 genera. The

greatest number of species (82) was found from the order Agaricales. The

families Tricholmataceae (36 species), Russulaceae (12 species) and Agaricaceae

(10 species) dominated by the number of species. Most species are in the

genera

Mycena

and

Russula

(7 species each) and

Collybia

(6 species). 113

macromycete species are reported for the first time from the region of the

Danube Plain. One species -

Russula minutula

V e 1e n. is new to Bulgaria.

Seven species are rare in Bulgaria.

The list of all macromycetes found in the Pleven’s Hills during the period

of investigation is given below.

The new to Bulgaria species (

Russula minutula

Velen.) was asterisked (*).

The rare species were designed with R. The species that were reported 1-3

times in the country or have limited occurrence are defined as rare. The

localities are indicated by their serial number: 1-6 (Materials and methods).
