ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The Pleven’s Hills are situated in the central parts of the Danube Plain and
to the south gracefully pass to the Balkan Foothill region. Its maximum
altitude is 315 m a. s. 1. and is in the surroundings of Pelishat village. The soils
in the northern and eastern parts of the hills are steppe Chernozems. In the
southern and southwestern parts - Luvisols and Phaeozems formed on the
place of former forest vegetation. The basic rocks are mainly upper cretaceous
chalks. The primary vegetation is highly fragmented, mostly destroyed by
human activity. The ridges and drier parts of the hills host oak forests, which
according to Tzonev (2002) belong to the association
Cotyno-Quercetum cerris
Tzonev 2002. More scarce on the north slopes of the hills and in the wet
valleys of the rivers (Viti, Chernelka ect.) is distributed the association
Staphyleo
- Tilietum tomentosae
Tzonev 2002, and on the rocky places -
Arabio tuttitae-
Carpinetum orientalis
Tzonev 2002. These are communities mainly dominated
by the silver lime and oriental hornbeam. The natural grass vegetation is
represented by the association:
Bothriochloetum ischaemi
(Krist, 1937) Pop
1977. Wet degraded pastures dominated by
Cynodon dactylon
Perss. occur
along the rivers. Large areas in the study region are covered with a forest
plantations of
Pinus nigra
Arn.,
P. sylvestris
L. and
Robinia pseudoacacia
