There are around 100 species in the

Suaeda

genus; 27 of them are common in the CIS. Most species grow under the drought

condiƟons typically in semi-deserts and deserts. One of the promising species for

in vitro

culƟvaƟon is

Suaeda heterophyl-

la

(Kar. et Kir.) Bunge. It is the annual haloxeromesophilic plant, growing on the salt-flats in Central Asia, the Russian South-

East, the Caucasus, Iran and Afghanistan. As arid soils oŌen accumulate different ions responsible for salinaƟon the aim of

the research was to test seed germinaƟve ability of dimorphic fruits of

Suaeda heterophylla

influenced by chlorides, sul-

phates and their combinaƟon. Both fruit types were treated with the following salt concentraƟons: NaCl and Na

2

SO

4

— 0.5,

1.0 and 3.0 %, combinaƟon of NaCl and Na

2

SO

4

(1:1) — from 1.0 to 6.0 %. For the first fruit type opƟmal concentraƟons of

NaCl and Na

2

SO

4

made up 3 and 4-5 % being 1 and up to 3 % respecƟvely for the second one.

S. heterophylla

showed the

low adaptability (1 %) to the mixture of NaCl and Na

2

SO

4

(1:1). Different responses of polymorphic seeds to salinity favour

seed bank conservaƟon having a tremendous importance for species’ survival for a long period under extreme condiƟons.

Keywords:

Suaeda heterophylla,

annual halophyte, seed, germinaƟve ability, chloride, sulfate salinity.
