lazarevnick2012@gmail.comFrom the first years of foundaƟon of the Department of Crop ProducƟon and Grassland Ecosystems there had been
commenced a field and meadow forage producƟon research. In the early days of the crop science most aƩenƟon was
paid to obtaining feeds from hayfields and pastures. For 28 years professor I. A. Stebut had been teaching a Grass-
land Management course at both General Farming and Private Farming Departments. During this Ɵme he devel-
oped a detailed descripƟon of more than 60 species of forage grasses, gave these grasses his assessment and evalu-
ated the suitability of each species for hay or pasture use, as well as seeding rates and areas of culƟvaƟon. Professor
A. M. Dmitriev, the first head of the Department of Grassland Management, has made a great contribuƟon to the de-
velopment of Russian scienƟfic Grassland Management. His first textbook “Grassland Management” was published
in 1914. In 1941, as a result of the accumulaƟon of new knowledge about meadows there was released a textbook
“Grassland Management and the basics of Grassland Science”. Dmitriev’s classificaƟon of meadows in the forest-
meadow zone has earned general recogniƟon. Together with V. R. Williams professor A. M. Dmitriev is considered the
founder of Russian scienƟfic grassland management. Academician N. G. Andreev and corresponding member of the
Russian State Academy of Agricultural Sciences, V. A. Tyuldyukov have also made great scienƟfic contribuƟons to the
theory and pracƟce of culƟvated pastures creaƟng. They gave scienƟfic credence to the doses of mineral ferƟlizers,
rates of meadow irrigaƟon and high-yielding grass mixtures. Professor V. A. Kharchenko began to explore not only
the grasslands, but also field fodder crops. He was a recognized man of gravitas when it came to the field and mead-
ow forage producƟon, root crops and mixed crops culƟvaƟon, fodder storage, silage and designing of green forage
chains. Academician D. N. Pryanishnikov has been working hard to expand the acreage of perennial legumes. These
crops ensure that we can get complete feeds and have a beneficial effect on soil ferƟlity. Academician N. A. Maysury-
an, professors G. S. Posypanov and G. G. Gataulina have conducted in-depth studies on lupine and soybean breeding
and propagaƟon of these crops to the north of the country. Academician I. S. ShaƟlov has made deep research on bi-
ological and agrotechnical basis of field grasses culƟvaƟon. Another academician, P. P. Vavilov, has been working on
breeding of fodder beet and oil radish and also on the introducƟon of non-tradiƟonal fodder crops. In modern condi-
Ɵons the research is focused on the development of resource-saving technologies of hayfields and pastures improv-
ing, and culƟvaƟon of high-yielding forage grasses, e.g.
Medicago varia
Mart
,
eastern galega, legumes.
