Production and Use o f Biogas: The Nigerian Experience.

Rufai, I.A. - Moscow Agricultural Academy, Russia.

The objective o f the study is to examine the status o f biogas

production and utilization in Nigeria. Biogas generation in Nigeria is

carried out by anaerobically digesting biomass o f plant or animal

origin. Unlike in some parts of the World, the process requires little or

no heating as mesophilic (digestion temperature 20...40°C) is the

common practice. The volume of animal, agricultural and municipal

wastes generated in the country (61,83 and 2.4 million tones per year

respectively) has been identified as a potential feedstock for biogas

generation. The need for advanced research in the use o f biogas as a

m o tor fuel for internal combustion engines has been emphasized.
