HORMONAL REGULATION OF TUBER FORMATION

Republic

The potato species Solanum andigena and Solanum tuberosum L.

CV. Disire, that both require short days for tuberization, were grown under

three different conditions. First, stem cuttings with one leaf were propa-

gated in vitro for 3-4 weeks to obtain stem and foliage under neutral condi-

tions (12-light, 12h-darkness, T-23°C). After formation of root system, all

variants were moved to non-inducing conditions (16-light, 8h-darkness,

T22°C) for 4-5 weeks. Tuberisation of all species was fully inhibited under

these conditions. At the third phase, different amounts of JA / 1,5,10l\/l /

were applied directly to area of stolon formation. Control plants were

moved to inducing conditions (8h-light, 16h-darkness). After 1,2 and 3

weeks, respectively, the growth and development of all plants was ob-

served and the amount of microtubers was counted. Two-three weeks af-

ter start of the experiment some of the control plants kept under SD I in-

ducing / conditions started to tuberise, and a small amount of microtubers

were formed. In other control plants, which were kept in non-inducing con-

ditions, there were no tubers found even after 4 weeks. In all plants, treated

by JA, formation and development of microtubers were one week earlier

than in control plants.. Species which were treated by JA / 1M /, had formed

some tubers and a wide root system. Application of JA in concentration of

5M had effect on development of foliage, stem and root system. The higher

number of microtubers was obtained in the case of concentration of 1M,

and those plants have formed larger tubers. In addition to this, all treated

plants had more widely developed root and stem system and well formed

microtubers. The results support the evidence that JA, applicated to area of

stolon formation, strongly influenced promotion of tuberization and devel-

opment of root and stem system.
