Gulenkin Head of Unit, Candidate of Science (Biology), FGBI «ARRIAH», Vladimir; e-mail: gulenkin@arriah.ru Summary Brief epidemiological analysis of past ASF epidemics occurred in such countries as Brazil, Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic is given in the paper. The extent of the infection spread, disease diagnostic measures and economic impact on pig industry due to stamping-out and depopula- tion carried out in outbreaks and zones at risk, respectively, are described. Special attention is given to the efficacy of anti-epidemic measures taken by government, Veterinary Services and livestock associations. Role of governmental regulation of «ASF-free territory» status after relevant di- agnostic investigations in domestic and wild pig populations using senti- nel animals as well as adoption of pig repopulation programme including comprehensive assistance to farmers is underlined.
