A method of accelerated selection of hens by egg production and a method utilizing heterosis in raising crossbred poultry has been advanced by the faculty of poultry breeding of the Moscow Lenin Order Agricultural Academy named after K. A. Timiryazev. On display is the work conducted in breeding lines and ' obtaining hybrids of egg production poultry belonging to species that adapt themselves to conditions of the south (Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute on Poultry Breeding), of the central zone of the USSR (All-Union Scientific Research and Technolo gical Institute on Poultry Breeding) and of the Baltic countries and northwestern part of the country (the Kurtnask experi mental station of the Estonian Scientific Research Institute on Animal Breeding). The chair of histology and embryology at the Kharkov Zoo- Veterinary Institute is studying the age morphology of poultry. The data that have been recorded characterize the morphofunc- tional maturity of a number of organs and systems in the post- embryonal period. Scientific research institutions have worked out a technology of poultry egg incubation which has been adopted by all incu bator houses. The following are the experiments that have been conducted in order to provide further increase of the hatchability and vitality of young stock by incubation: the dependence of the hatchability of chicks on the optimal morphological and biochemical indices of the quality of hen eggs (Genetics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR); the irradiation of eggs with micro-doses of ionizing radiation (Genetics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR); the cooling of eggs in order to accelerate the embyo’s usage of mineral substances (Rostov University); the rating of hens by the growth of blastodiscs the first day of incubation in order to determine speciments with high vita lity and productivity (All-Union Scientific Research Institute on Poultry Breeding); the biological bases of goose egg incubation (Ukrainian Scien tific Research Institute on Poultry Breeding); the ultra-violet irradiation of incubated eggs and poultry (Kherson Agricultural Institute named after K. D. Tsurupa). Also on display are works submitted by the Kharkov Zoo-Veteri nary Institute — “Metabolism in Tissues of Birds Depending on Age and Physiological Condition”, and “The Influence of the Energy-Protein Ratio on the Quality of Duckling Carcasses”. The All-Union Scientific Research Institute of the Poultry-dress ing Industry has worked out light statuses for birds belonging to different age groups with the aim of achieving high produc tivity. Presented in the veterinary section are the works of the All- Union Scientific Research Institute on Bird Diseases dealing with the diagnosis of tuberculosis using a highly effective allergic pre paration — dry purified tuberculine. The question of treatment in litter peat of acid-resistant microflora which calls forth the false reaction of hens to tuberculine has been subjected to study. The Lithuanian Veterinary Scientific Research Institute has advanced antigen which in the agglutination blood-drop reaction differentiates hens suffering from tuberculosis from those sensi bilized by acid-resistant peat microflora. The diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of respiratory mico- plasmosis have been worked out by the Ukrainian Scientific 11 Электронная Научная СельскоХозяйственная Библиотека
