and Palynology at the Institute of Botany. In 1991 he was awarded a
Dr.Sc.degree for his vast and deep elaborated study on
Composition, structure and
main trends o f evolution o f Bulgarian Miocene flora
and next year he received
a professorship. The whole of his life and work from doctorship to Director
during the last ten years he spent at the Institute of Botany.
A number of international projects were corried out under his guidance
and collaboration. They are related to the climate evolution in Eurasia, global
biological events during Earth’S history, correlation of the Tertiary Floras of
Bulgaria and Poland, and many others. Ten projects connected with history,
composition, paleoecological reconstructions of the vegetation and climate
during the Tertiary in Bulgaria have been completed under his guidance and
.participation.
It is very difficult to enumerate all scientific achievements of our colleague
Prof. E. Palamarev. His long scientific activity led to many important and
interesting results: 70 new species and one subfamily; 493 new species for the
Bulgarian fossil flora; he suggested new hypotheses about the origin and
divergence of the Mediterranean dendroflora on the territory of Tethys and
Paratethys basins; he advanced new hypotheses on the evolution of genus
Stratiotes
L. in the Tertiary flora of Eurasia; he outlined the history of genus
Acer
L. on the Balkan Peninsula; he proposed new paleofloristic subprovince
Central Balkan Miocene Paleophytohorion; he advanced new ideas about
evolution, place of speciation and phytogeographical differentiation of family
Fagaceae
during the Paleogene, etc.
In his work Prof. E. Palamarev applied modern approaches in paleobotanical
investigation such as the ichnophyological method, diaspore analysis, cuticular
analysis, chronoareal, dinamic principle, the paleoclimatic method after
Mosbrugger and Utesher, and many others.
As a member of many scientific councils and boards he participated in
taking important decisions connected with the development of the botanical
science and nature conservation. Prof. E. Palamarev was actively involved in
lecturing at the Departament of Botany, Faculty of Biology at Sofia University.
He was invited as a lecturer
on Principles o f Palaeobotany
since 1973 till 2001
and
Plant evolution and phyllogeny
during 1998-2001. He was also a scientific
tutor of six students from the Sofia University. He was invited as a guest-
professor in the University of Frankfurt am Main, University of Thubingen
and Humboldt University Berlin.
Prof. E. Palamarev was a member of many national and international
editorial boards, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal
Phytologia Balcanica
from
its foundation till his death.
It is very difficult to list all activities and contributions of Prof.
D.Sc. E.
Palamarev to the botanical science. Soft-spoken, considerate to all colleagues,
he was ready to help everyone in his scientific work. His death is a great loss
for all that had known him and worked with him.
