Dr.Sc.Emanuil Christov Palamarev
died after a short illness on January 28th 2004.
His death is a great loss not only for the Institute
of Botany but also for the whole Bulgarian
botanical society. He was among the most learned
enthusiastic and restless scientists, representative
of one whole generation of great Bulgarian
botanists.
He worked in the field of paleobotany in all
its aspects. From the time of his studies in the
Faculty of Biology-Geology-Geography at Sofia
University „St. Kliment Ohridski" he showed
interest to the history of the Tertiary floras and
vegetation. After graduation of the highest grades
he began his doctoral studies and was awarded
a Ph.D. degree in 1960. The title of his thesis
was
Paleobotanical investigation o f the Cucurovo coal basin.
The next year he
was appointed a scientific researcher in the Institute of Botany at Bulgarian
Academy of Sciences. In 1967-1968 he obtained a Humboldt fellowship. In
1971 he was elected Associated Professor in the Department of Paleobotany
