Compendium on Fodder Production. The 5-th edition updated and supplemented / Edited by V.M. Kosolapov and I.A. Trofimov. - Russian Agricultural Academy Press, 2014. - 717 p. The new Compendium on Fodder Production is updated and supple mented edition, prepared on the fourth issue basis. Fodder production - is the most scale and multifunctional branch o f agriculture, which integrates plant industry and animal husbandly, farming agriculture, ecology and rational na ture management. The Compendium aims to provide easy-to-use guidance on many research areas, including biological, ecological, and economic charac teristics of the basic crops o f haylands and pastures, information about nature grasslands, meadow and field fodder production, seed multiplication of pe rennial grasses, the forage crops protection of weeds, pests and deceases, feed processing, preservation and utilization, mechanization o f fodder production and rational nature management. Grasslands of Russia occupies the acreage about 92 min ha (out of them the share of pastures - is 68 min ha and hayl ands - is 24 min ha); they stretch at all natural zones o f the Russian Federa tion. The total reserve of feeds on the grasslands is 60-80 min t on a dry mat ter. On the base of approaches and technologies, improving growth and prop agation of the valuable crop species, they conduct a surface enriching of haylands and pastures on the preserved old seeded and natural grass stands without plowing and reseeding. As a result the yield ability increases in more than 1,5-2 times. Radical improvement of grasslands suspects the establish ment of seeded grass stands on the base of regionized breeding varieties and provides increase yield in 2-3 and more times. The field fodder production is directed on perfection the specific and varietal structure of crops, disposition them in seed rotation system; on extension for optimal agro-technical para meters the sowing areas with legumes and high-protein oily crops. It will al low reducing the feed protein deficit and will promote the solving of this problem in the perspective. Increase the volume of fodders manufacture is not the only aim o f fodder production as the agricultural branch. Fodder pro duction provides stability o f agrolandscapes, rational nature management and besides, improves ecology. Key words: plant cultivation, natural grasslands, forage crops, mea dows, field forage production, breeding, seed production, harvesting, storage, use o f feeds. 7 1 1
